Drugs are great to talk about, because it kind of brings back the fun of doing them. It’s what people who have been to NA call ‘euphoric recall’, which they consider pretty bad, but if you don’t have a problem and you’re just laughing about being so stoned you thought you’d solved the crisis in the Middle East so you wrote it down but when you were sober it turned out you’d just drawn a picture of a cat wearing a blazer and written ‘Chairman Miaow’ under it.
I asked this cool band Throats to make a mixtape for us, and they (I think it was just Thomas) made a mix of songs they get stoned to, it pretty much covers a lot of stoned bases and is a great listen. Here are some ridiculous questions and answers about weed from Thomas, and the mix. Enjoy, folks.
What was the first time you smoked weed?
I must’ve been around 14, it was an intense summer day and I’d just started hanging out with some kids who were around 16-17. They took me to this huge abandoned sewage works, it was completely intense, massive sprawling warehouses and buildings to explore. We climbed up onto this watchtower overlooking the whole thing and sparked up a joint. It was dope. I just remember laughing so hard. We wandered round the place totally baked and somehow fished out a briefcase from some sewage swamp water. We lost our mind that it might have money or drugs in it but when we opened it all it contained was a Passport, shoelaces and a tube of Bonjela. What a sweet day.
What do you like to eat when stoned?
Even though i say so myself i’m a pretty good cook, even when i’m stoned i can competently make a pretty sick meal. I just like hot stuff, comfort food like mac and cheese or some homemade soup. Shit like crisps and chocolate is completely overrated stoner munch, it doesn’t fill you up and you’re left snacking your way through the fridge throughout the night. I’m too poor for that.
Do you play a lot of video games?
I don’t really have the patience to play computer games. I mean i’ve completed all the Zelda games but that’s it. I’m pretty into Mariokart and Smash Bros when i’m baked, it’s intense as shit, i can’t imagine much compares.
Does smoking weed make touring go faster?
Well it makes van journeys bearable. To be honest rolling up to a venue quasi-stoned after a day in the van sucks. You’re in a dumb haze that makes loading in, setting up and soundcheck even more tedious than it is. Weed may be the answer to a lot of life’s problems but with tour i guess you’ve gotta suck it up and get on with it.
What is the best weed album ever?
This is a weird one, a lot of my favourite non-stoned records sound really shit when I’m high. I tend to focus way too much on the way the record sounds and the recording techniques they used, Steve Albini records sound terrible when you’re baked which doesn’t make sense at all. I tend to listen to stuff with untraditional song structures and sounds, Daniel A.I.U Higgs ‘Atomic Yggdrasil Tarot’ is awesome for that, any Earth/Sleep/Sunn record is pretty essential stoned listening but ‘Close to the Edge’ by YES probably takes the crown.
How has getting stoned influenced Throats?
