It’s going to be forty years since the Manson Family murders on Sunday. I’ve never really got the fascination that people have with Charles Manson. He’s pretty interesting, sure, I mean, I’d definitely watch an hour long TV special about his life, but I know that the footage and photos are going to be the same footage and photos they’ve had since day one, and that nothing new is really going to be said.
His life before everything went down was pretty interesting, definitely, he spent a lot of time in mental facilities and prison and did a lot of pretty “fun to read about” sicko stuff. But, if I was going to wear a t-shirt or get a tattoo of a serial killer or cult leader, I’d much rather go for someone a who had a higher kill count or a bigger cult.
If you’re into extremes -which is what Manson has really become shorthand for- surely you should choose a murderous icon like Harold Shipman to be etched permanently onto your forearm, or get a series of David Koresh t-shirts printed up if people who are really good at making up religions are your bag.
I think the reason people like Charlie more than, say, Shipman and Koresh is because Shipman looks like a man whose M&S shirt would stink of stale sweat and he would have crumbs in his beard and Koresh looks like one of those early computer guys who where the first people to get BBCs. They look like nerds, basically, and Manson looks like a rock star, plus his followers were all hot babes and not elderly pensioners or uggo religious types.
Anyway, the good people at New Real Films have made a film loosely based around the Manson Family trials, about one of the jurors being in love with one of the Manson Family girls. I think the basic idea behind it is that a good Christian boy has a boner for this hot badass girl with a cross carved in her forehead, and experiences all these sexy feelings even though he’s got a boring old virgin for a girlfriend back at home. Frankly, that sounds like a great premise for a movie. Here is the trailer:
