CTRL+ALT+SHIFT Unmasks Corruption is launching a campaign and comic book aimed at illustrating (get it?) the consequences of corruption, and denouncing it as a whole. They’ve assembled a team of talented illustrators to bring all the stories to life, Lightspeed Champion, Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis), Jan Bielecki and Platform favourite Ferry Gouw, among a skew of others. I also wrote a story for the comic, here’s what it’s about…
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m pretty familiar with governmental crooks and corrupted ‘elites’. Although the adaption I’ve written is purely fictional, and character names have been fabricated, the reality of it is that it could have been an actual case of a girl-kidnapped-because-dad’s-rival-wanted-re-election played out in Port-au-Prince four years ago. I have no idea why, but I ditched out on Shot Callin’ just as it was getting good: My friend Caroline’s step dad actually got, well, dad-napped because his brother had just won a seat as Minister of Education. And though he did get off easy (locked away in a tiny room for 3 days, found a window, jumped out), I could cite a not-so-great story ending stat if you’ve asked me to.
But the story is not about Caroline’s step dad, it’s about a boy named Edner, who lives in Cite Soleil, and is a member of the bidonvilles‘ most feared gang. I’d love to give you a short synopsis of the story, but I’ve wrote it a while back, and right now I don’t have my rough draft, so forgive me for coming short-handed!
We all talk about world famine, AIDS, swine flu, CREDIT CRUNCH, and all of the catastrophical disasters that are bound to annihilate us all, but in the furthest places, and silent corners, corruption is responsible for perpetuating all of the above mentioned (believe it). I’ve seen it happen, heard the stories, and sent the condolences, so I’d account that to be legit/fact/TRUE STORY.
