I watch movies about the summer when it’s nearly summer. I don’t like to watch too much tv in the summer because I force myself to go outside, but around the end of April I get psyched on swimming and getting sunburnt, and have to find one of these films to watch.
WORDS: ROBERT FOSTER
Kids
Yeah, I know, this movie is about someone getting AIDS, but it’s also about being young in the summer in New York, and it looks like SO MUCH FUN. They hang out in the park and smoke blunts, skate about wearing loose fitting clothes, and call up to people in high apartments to come and hang out. Then they break into a pool and skinny dip – it just looks so good. Also, their slang makes me hot, which makes me worry that I might be gay. But then I see a teenage Rosario Dawson and she reminds me that I SURE AM NOT.
Dazed and Confused
The last fucking day of school in the summer was the BEST. That feeling that you were going to chill the fuck out for two months, the only responsibility afforded to you would be working a summer job, where you’d be stoned the whole time anyway. I miss that feeling on a daily basis. When I watch Dazed and Confused it takes me to that place in my mind, and I want to stay up drinking til the sun comes up, and make out with bitchy girls in the year above.
Endless Summer
I hate living in the city sometimes, I think about moving to Cornwall to become a surfer all the time, but they’d hate me for being a yuppie and a fake, and I’d miss my friends and want to make fun of all the beads the guys down there wear. I guess it may never happen, but maybe one day I’ll take the time to learn to surf properly, and at least spend a fortnight doing it. Hell, maybe one day I WILL move down there -I don’t even like my friends that much. Endless Summer makes me want to do that so badly. I just want to be as happy and relaxed as the people in this movie. I watch this just before bed and drift off to the narrator’s soporific, gentle tone of voice, and dream the happiest of dreams.
I was going to put Blue Juice in but it’s not that great or summery, I wanted to think of a good British summer film but I couldn’t – anyone got any ideas?
As a little bonus for you, I was searching for that movie I came across my favourite song to listen to in the summer, which is Don’t Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult. It makes me feel like it’s about 8pm in July and I’m standing in cut offs with my girl and my bros by a lake with lots of beers and a bong.
