The lead singer of Boston killed himself using disposable BBQ sets. Using Homebase to terminate yourself displays the kind of ingenuity that makes me think he was taken too soon. But then I listen to this song and think that anyone retarded enough to be involved with a song more histrionic than the Third Reich and with at least 84 guitar solos must be unstable enough to warrant a mercy killing.

People who claim to be depressed are usually just attention seeking losers who need to be loved so much they wish they were raped by their uncle when they were 12 just so they have something real to cry about. Getting upset about daddy cancelling that monthly standing order just isn’t authentic enough, sorry. The truly sad and low don’t make a big deal of it. Like Will Oldham. He’s all matter of fact “yeah life is alright and that thanks, but every now and again I see a relentless chasm of darkness that threatens to swallow my whole existence and leave me spiraling into a fit of torturous self-loathing so dense my skin feels like it’s about to tear from my bones, but it’s no big deal, honestly, I’m fine. How have you been?”.

Xiu Xiu – “Suha”
Xiu Xiu songs usually evoke one of two things – the sound Diane made as her limousine crashed into that French tunnel wall or how Chloe Sevigny felt when she discovered she had AIDs in Kids. Either way, Xiu Xiu are responsible for the most harrowing, depressing, disturbing and fear-inducing records I’ve ever heard. This song pretty much ties the noose for you.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – “People Aint No Good”
Sartre once famously claimed that “hell is other people” and that’s the kind of misanthropic worldview I can get behind. Some people are the worst people in the world. So bad are people in fact that it’s a daily struggle to accept you’re part of the same humanity. Lord of Darkness Nick Cave knows this too. He also knows that love, loyalty, integrity and virtue are all a bullshit front covering the black-hearted centre of man’s evil. Yep, people really ain’t no good.

Suicide – “Frankie Teardrop”
The band are called Suicide. The song is about killing your wife and child, before slowly turning the gun on yourself, because modern life is a hellish wasteland of crushing loneliness and broken dreams. Alan Vega screams like an evil dead Elvis so intensely that it’s practically an “Open Sesame” for the gates of hell. These ten minutes couldn’t be more perfect than if they were a Sion Sono film.
