Wisely, people don’t attempt to remix Bob Dylan very often. They dare not touch it for fear of smudging a masterpiece. Mark Ronson tried it, and wiped his big greasy jazz hands all over Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I Go Mine), like Mr Bean sneezing all over Whistler’s Mother in the film Bean.
Now the producer/MC duo J.Period and K’Naan have incorporated a whole Dylan remix album into their series of tributes to great artists, called The Messenger. They also have a go at bringing Bob Marley and the Nigerian artist Fela Kuti into the 21st Century. Under 25 minutes long, the Dylan album is a neat introduction to the Bard for a generation raised on hip hop. There are samples of some of Dylan’s funniest interviews featured in No Direction Home put together with remixes of Don’t Think Twice (it’s Alright), Lay Lady Lay, Fourth Time Around, and A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.
But the standout moment by far is the bonus track, a big beat remix of It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding), using Dylan’s blues guitar like Nas used his father’s harmonica loop on Bridging The Gap.
