Prince harry is racist

Happy new year Platform readers. Our country is poor and one of our princes has been ‘exposed’ as a racist.

The News Of The World published a video filmed in 2006 where Prince Harry points a camera at ‘Ahmed’ – a fellow trainee soldier, and jests, ‘Look, my little Paki friend’.

SHOCKING! Not really. The wtf element of this story isn’t the fact that racist comments were made – we’re talking about a guy who wore a swastika on an armband to a toff party – he probably doesn’t really like brown people. The absurdity is the country’s reaction, and the lack of action being taken.

Our prime minister says he gives Harry, “the benefit of the doubt”, regarding the comments, and the only Amy action being taken is the possibility of a formal investigation. Just because the guy said sowee we’re sort of supposed to forget the video ever happened, forgive him, be proud of him. Luv u, Britain.

Hmmm I'm British Asian too. I got (rightfully) offended when some random guy on the street called me a "paki cunt" the other day, but I guess if one of my friends ever used it I might be slightly offended too. That said, I've heard a fair few 'asian' jokes in my time and endured a ridiculous amount of stereotypes as jokes from people I'm friends with. It's strange that no-one looks shocked/embarrassed when I get asked for the hundredth time if I'm going to be a doctor, or if I eat curry everyday, or if that other Asian girl I hang out with is my sister (we're not, we look completely different, but obviously we must be sisters as we're both Asian) but everyone gets all jumpy as soon as the word 'Paki' is said.

Sam's right that because Ahmed isn't actually aware it seems cruel, but this video is from a couple of years ago, isn't it? In which case he would've seen it by now, and he didn't make a complaint about it. Surely it says something that while Ahmed has said nothing, probably not all that offended, the News of the World has had a fit about it? Then again he could easily have been paid off by the royals.

Ahh I don't know - I feel like I can easily be swayed to either side of this argument. I give up.

chill the F out as a young british asian i have no problem with harry referring to his friend as 'paki'. people seem to love to hate harry, and think that being asian, not offended easily, and 'posh' mutually exclusive. i went to a british boarding school much like harrys, and there, these terms are not used for abuse, they are used in a totally different way, banterously, and no one is offended by them. this lilly livered country needs to stop being so easily offended, most of the 'offence' is coming from white british dominated media, who have no right to speak for asians, its just another throwback to colonial days where the white dominated heirarchy 'spoke' for 'stupid' natives who OBVIOUSLY couldnt speak for themselves.
think abut this- if we (i say we, british people) are truly over their rascist, imperialist, colonial past, then why get so jittery when these words are used? is something festering below the skin of this nation? has rascism just burrowed deeper into society rather than been eradicated? it would seem so, because dont like like no one uses the words 'paki' and other terms anymore under their breath. as a young british asian i have been at the recieving end of it, and i would rather prince harry used it to refer to his friend than to be called it by some guy on the street who hates me because i drive a nice car.

not that I'm saying the monarchy are lovely, open-minded, down-to-earth folks, but these remarks have added a whole new level to how stupid they really are. So stupid, in fact, that they seem to be oblivious to how racism stopped being politically acceptable last century. Oh my, what a great figurehead we have leading our country. I don't think it matters whether they're friends because Ahmed wasn't aware he was being filmed. If he'd called him a "paki" to his face and there was some comradery that would be different. But if you're calling your Asian friends paki or your black friends nigger and they don't know about it, that's definitely racist.

Before I judge I want Ahmed's views on the matter. If Ahmed and Harry are actually friends then it's slightly different. Not that it's okay to call someone a Paki, obviously, but it's like...if your friend is ginger you make ginger jokes, and it's okay cos they're your friend and you're only joking and your friend knows you don't actually have anything against gingers. So if Ahmed is okay with it because it's all a friendly joke, and Ahmed calls Harry something rude and gingerish in a return friendship gesture I guess it's okay.

That said, none of my friends has ever gone so far as to call me a Paki, even as a joke, so that's not really a good enough argument. In which case, coupled with his line about "ragheads" he's probably actually racist and thinks it's funny so he's a complete dick who needs to sort his life out, basically.

What made me laugh more than the "hilarious" yootz video (which you need to re-upload btw) was your line "This guy, seriously. DIS GUY!" What a guy indeed.

As much as I dislike the monarchy I found his video diary quiet refreshing, not the racist parts, but the way in which he was joking with his friends about the queen i thought was quite nice to see. I mean, take away the gratuitous riches, but it must be hard having that level of publicity surrounding your every move. It was kind of cool to see him with his guard down, pissing about with his friends like we all do. You also have to put the video in context (not the racist parts), he was in the army doing mindnumbing training exercises, something had to keep him and his friends amused and if that was taking the piss out of the Queen then so be it.
