Last night I went to see the mighty Andrew WK play in London. It was sweaty, it was loud, and it was awesome! Everyone there partied hard and it was beautiful.
Andrew is a unique performer. He charged about the stage in his trademark white shirt and jeans, occasionally stopping at his keyboard to bash out an impressive piano solo (he is a classically trained pianist don’t you know), and he partied on, even after a mass stage invasion left him with a very familiar bloody nose.
But as a byproduct of all this fun, I woke up this morning with an aching head and what felt like sand behind my eyes, so instead of listening to The Wolf (Andrew’s second studio album), I needed something else. I needed the musical equivalent of alka-seltzer. Something that would relieve my pain and stop me feeling so strung out, while still having a bit of fizz to it.
My medication came from Starsmith, the London based remixer and producer who is going on tour with the dreadful Frankmusik next month (but don’t hold that against him). I’ve been listening to two of his remixes today, the first is a version of Australian Idol star Lisa Mitchell’s song Coin Laundry, which is pretty interesting on its own. And the second is a lovely version of Passion Pit’s Sleepy Head – a song I don’t usually like to see remixed because the original is so good – with cutie Ellie Goulding providing the vocal.

I like Starsmith’s style. He’s not too brash, and makes electro pop music without straying too far into the camp camp. Not an English Fred Falke, but nearly.
