Second post about skateboarders who do art in a day. Sorry.
Kyle Green likes to take photos, paint pictures and skateboard. I found him because I have the internet and he’s a contributor to this blog called Lords Of Apathy which I think is really good.
The thing I love about the internet is that it’s a great window into other people’s lives if they want it to be. Kyle’s personal blog features his paintings and photos (both the art kind of photo and the jokes good times kind of photo) and give you a pretty good idea of how good it would would be to be as active and creative as he is.
I got in contact with Kyle to shoot a few rolls of film for Platform, I think he’s in the process of doing that now, but I also thought I’d speak to him about doing all the other stuff he does and show you some of that.
How often do you paint?
I try to do a little something every night, I hit a lot of dry spells though (glug glug glug).
Why do you like to paint?
It makes me feel nice, getting stuff out of my head and onto paper. Plus girls like it when you paint puppies and kittens and other sissy crap.
Who do you show your stuff to?
Well I guess I show some of my drawings to pretty much anyone who looks at my blog. Apart from that, just a couple close friends.
Did you go to art school?
Nope, never considered it and I don’t regret that one bit.

You live in Santa Cruz right? Is it super sunny all the time there? Do you think that affects your painting?
I don’t actually. Grew up there but I live in Southern California where it is even sunnier. The only way it affects my work is by getting in the way. It’s hard to finish some silly illustration job when you could be riding bikes or sitting on the beach.
What other stuff affects your painting? Is there a particular thing that drives you?
I don’t really know, everything does probably. It’s just whatever I think will be neat or funny or whatever. I would say girl problems and red wine brings out the most interesting work.
You’ve painted a lot about music, why’s that?
I have? I don’t know. There’s lots of good lines and good characters in music. Might as well illustrate some of it.

Why do you love skating?
I like playing in traffic.
What is the best time you ever had skating?
Last summer in Barcelona for two months by myself. Just did what I wanted when I wanted.
Why do you think so many skaters are creative?
Cause in skateboarding you do what you want to, not what your coach wants you too. Same in art -nobody can tell you what to do.
What are your favourite pictures that you’ve painted?
I have no idea. I really like painting portraits of people’s animals for them. But for the most part making quick little portraits using watercolors is most rewarding for me. Acrylics is kinda like work and watercolors is straight up playtime for me.
What are your favourite photos you’ve taken?
Ah hell, I don’t know. Trying to take skate photos with horsey is pretty fun. I took a trip to Bilbao and shoot a couple rolls and almost every photo I got back surprised me. That’s usually not the case though…thank god for photoshop.
