Remember when I told you about this thing I wrote not to long ago? Well, the CTRL+ALT+SHIFT Unmasks Corruption exhibition opens today. I went to their launch last night, and though I’m in no way a ‘creative’ (gave it up looonggg time ago), and art exhibits are not usually where you’ll find me chilling, I was fairly excited. I don’t know what people do at these things apart from look at walls! And if there was any chance of a philosophical fight breaking out..well, no luck.
The drawings were amazing, of course. There were lots of thought provoking ones, and very few that pissed me off a bit, so all the vibe was quite loving. I’m guessing most people in there knew each other, and it’s the sort of place where kids are saying, ‘Oh, we never get to hang out and drink a few beers together, because we’re really busy being awesome at drawing, so exhibitions are the only times we really get to see each other’. It was nice seeing that mutual respect and admiration of peers. We’re like that over here at Platform BTW, except we probably can get a bit annoyed at seeing each other everyday.
I thought these were pretty ‘in yo face’. It’s a story related to AIDS and Corruption, which you could have guessed, but the needles had me cringing since I’ve got a massive fear of needles (and probably could never take smack, ever). They’ve been put together by Dave McKean.
More needles for you.
Yep.
Sorry for the lack of details in this one, zooming would’ve blurred it all. These are from a guy called Lee O’Connor, with text from Pat Mills. I’m sure you can clearly tell from here though, that’s a sweet looking drawing, and up close she looks like an Iranian Angelina Jolie. SPOILER ALERT: She gets shot.
There’s also a mini room that resembles a cave where short films are shown. This one was about consumption, and the whole cycle of capitalism – how it doesn’t achieve happiness and all of that stuff. You probably already know it all but don’t really care about it cause you’re too young and you don’t want to be yelled at when buying a new pair of Air Jordans. It was good though, I liked that scene the most.
Oh hai Kanye! I went to the downstairs cabinet where I stumbled on these, which are a series of Black Panther newspapers from Steve Lazarides’ personal collection.
These ones are by Dev Hynes a.k.a Lightspeed Champion.
Some quality illustrations from Dan Goldman.
If you’ve enjoyed this, or maybe you’re a comics nerd and have spare time, you might want to head over at Lazarides for 10 minutes or so.
I’ve got a spare copy over here at the Platform towers, and if anyone calls first dibs, I’ll be more than happy to send it to you (IT COSTS FIVE QUID), holla at adele.austin@readplatform.com
I might include some candy in there if you want, so send me allergy notices and I’ll sort shit out.
